Interview With the Fringe Benefits Band

Everyone loves a good cover band. And Northern Virginia just happens to have bred a fantastic one. Fringe Benefits Band performs Motown, 80s, 90s and even current songs — quite a mix!

“As a band, we’ve learned how to make an otherwise ordinary night out into a life-long memory that everyone will remember as one unit,” said John Fichter, guitar and vocals. “There is something magical happening at these shows. People are coming together. It’s contagious.”

The band recently released their second album, “Step Out,” after enjoying a successful debut album, which went to number one on an indie chart. “Step Out” has three originals on the album. Their title song is about “stepping out of your life, taking a look back in and taking a good hard look at reality,” said Fichter. “It’s a song that we think will do even better than our first original.”

When asked how he would describe the band, Fichter replied, “If I had to label the band or say what it’s really all about, I’d have to say that it’s about love. It’s pretty easy to see it anytime you go to a show.”

Fichter shared that Julianna Smith, lead vocals, possesses many talents, but above all she’s a master at reading people. “She can look into a full room of people and know who may be having a difficult time, who may be celebrating a birthday, who may be feeling like cutting loose or needing a little cheering up.” said Fichter. “And she can melt a person’s soul with her beautiful voice coupled with her amazing delivery. It’s pretty incredible to watch.”

Each band member brings something special to the stage. Bruce Moore, guitar and vocals, is described as “the glue linking the peeps in the band.” Gregg Sales, bass, possesses the greatest amount of musical knowledge and swiftly steers rehearsals. Greg Menke, the newest member, plays drums and writes out every single beat, making sure the band keeps to the structure of the song. And lastly, Moore said of Fichter, “John brings the positive attitude and fun to the band … It’s the best thing about life, and John has more of it than anyone you’ll meet.”

Giving back to the community is equally as important as music to these members. “We’ve done so much together,” said Fichter. The band has come together for such activities as feeding the homeless, playing charity events and hosting raffles to benefit Comfort Cases.

“We’re all very proud to be in a position to help those in need,” said Fichter. “In a world where everyone seems to be falling apart, we are trying to bring everyone together. These past nearly four years have been fantastic. It’s a great time to be a part of this great group of people.”
