Are you a young professional looking to connect with other professionals? If so, Melissa D. Gill, Branch Manager of The Fauquier Bank of Haymarket, Gainesville, Bristow, recommends the Young Professionals of Northern Virginia, or YPNova, a program of the Prince William Chamber of Commerce.

Gill chose to get involved in the group when she became a manager at the bank. When she was looking for networking events, her bank suggested the Prince William Chamber. The Fauquier Bank had previously sponsored YPNova, so they were well acquainted with the program. Gill liked the variety of events offered by YPNova, and it seemed like a good fit for her.

She thinks the group benefits the business community because “it offers a smaller, more casual setting for those that are newer in the professional world, those who may be uncomfortable attending events with 50+ attendees that all seem to know each other and are completely comfortable with public speaking.”

YPNova holds formal and informal networking events such as speed networking and after-hours events. They give back to the community by volunteering at Serve or raising money for a scholarship to Leadership Prince William. “We look for a variety of ways to bring young professionals together to both mentor up-and-coming professionals and to be mentored ourselves from the experienced professionals in the Chamber and have fun at the same time,” said Gill.

Gill spoke about the variety of industries represented in YPNova. She said there are people from all walks of life including banking, finance, web design, government, insurance, marketing, law, etc. “You can find everything from home-based businesses to the area’s largest companies represented.”

So why is it called “young professionals?” Gill said, “I think Chambers all over try to have a Young Professionals group – something to appeal to the next generation of leaders. Although, it could definitely be a mind thing as well – young at heart, so to speak.”

YPNova is just one part of the Prince William Chamber of Commerce. The chamber is a voice for the business community in the DC Metro region. They say, “Together with our diverse membership, representing nearly 70,000 employees, we work to create an environment where business and people thrive. To accomplish this, we focus our efforts in the key areas of business growth, economic development, advocacy, education and community outreach. In this way, we are building a solid foundation for the success of our business members and our community. We are dedicated to the individual success of our members and in nurturing an environment where businesses and people thrive.”

    The Chamber’s services include:

    • Business-building programming and updates
    • Access to business and community leaders
    • The ability to effect legislative change
    • Cost-effective marketing and visibility
    • Opportunities to enhance the community
